A Kannapolis Woman Running For City Council Looking To Make History

KANNAPOLIS, NC. — It’s clear Jeanne Dixon has a passion for the Kannapolis community. She’s spent most of her career in public service and noticed not many people in municipal government looked like her. She’s one of ten people running for three Kannapolis City Council seats in the non-partisan race.

“I just wanted to give a different direction, a different perspective in my service,” Dixon says.

If she wins, the 48-year Kannapolis resident would be the first Black woman in history to serve on the city council. Dixon hopes to inspire other young people to get involved.

“Primarily to help younger people to see someone who looks like them and to help them become interested and motivated and encouraged to be a part of a city government.”

The focus of her campaign is the revitalization of areas outside of downtown and affordable housing. But she’s also running for her mother, her daughter, and her granddaughters.

“Girls in my family, girls in the community so that I can be that person that they would say, she made history.”
