CHARLOTTE, NC – No bond for the man accused of killing a Gastonia woman and dumping her body in South Carolina. Charles Combs faced a judge on Wednesday after being transported from Myrtle Beach to Mecklenburg County.
People attending today’s hearing, including the cousin of another one of Combs’ victims. She says they are there for justice.
“It opened it all back up again,” said Almetra Schofield.
She watched as the man who killed her cousin in 2004 was denied bond during his initial appearance in front of a judge.
“I just wish that the lord have mercy upon his soul,” said Schofield, “No matter what he does. Do not let him out.”
Schofield’s cousin, Marshida Dorsey, was killed in 2004 by Combs. According to court documents, Combs got into an argument with Dorsey, a gun went off, Combs got possession of the weapon and fired several more rounds into Dorsey.
He plead guilty to second degree murder in 2007 and spent a total of 12 years in prision.
“To make sure that this man does not get out again,” said Schofield.
Combs is now accused of killing LaPorscha Baldwin and dumping her body in Fairfield County, South Carolina.
Baldwin had been missing for days. Her body was found last week. Combs was arrested in Myrtle Beach over the weekend.
Schofield says she wanted to attend the hearing to support the Baldwin family.
“We feel sorry for her because this should have never happened,” said Schofield.
She says there were similarities in how the women were treated.
“Marshida told me that he told her that if she ever left him, he was going to kill her. And she was trying to leave,” explained Schofield.
Combs is now charged with first degree murder. He was assigned a public defender.
“He has destroyed families. He has taken away a mother that has an 18 month old who will never get to see their mother again and that’s not fair,” said Schofield.
