CHARLOTTE — A Civil Rights icon is honored in Charlotte.  Saturday, Charlotte City leaders unveiled a statue to honor the life of Julius Chambers. Dozens turned out at the Little Sugar Creek Greenway for the ceremony.

Chambers launched the state’s first integrated law firm, winning landmark cases in education, labor and voting rights.

Those who knew him say Chambers not only made life better for North Carolinians, but for people all around the country as well.

“What is great is that a lot of us surrounding this ceremony knew him, and we didn’t have to make up anything.  This guy was absolutely terrific for our community,” says Harvey Gant, former Charlotte Mayor.

The Chambers sculpture is the ninth project and 13th statue in the Trail of History’s Collection.  It’s located at the main fountain at the intersection of Kings Drive and Torrence Street.
