CHARLOTTE, NC. — Justin McErlain is certainly humble, but what this Charlotte-based photographer has accomplished is pretty innovative. The popular photographer known online as Uncle Jut earned around $45,000 in about two months selling NFTs.
“Just a blessing. The right time, the right place. It all just happened so quickly for me being accepted into the space, into this community,” McErlain says.
Non-Fungible Tokens transform digital works of art and other collectibles into one-of-a-kind, verifiable assets that are easy to trade on the blockchain, which is the digital database underpinning cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Unlike NFTs, those assets can be replaced or exchanged with another identical one of the same value, much like a dollar bill. McErlain listed his first piece on July 23rd and got a bid in five minutes. In the first two months, he sold five more pieces and a few others on other platforms. Adding up to 9 1/2 Ethereum, which is valued at $45,000.
“The community behind these projects, whether it’s a collectible project or from one of one artist like myself, it really is a special community and a lot of these collectors it’s important, but they really do care more about the artist behind the work.”
McErlain says he sees an opportunity for more Charlotte artists to get involved.
“There’s definitely not enough Charlotte artists that made the jump into the space yet.”
