The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is conducting a death investigation after a nearly 24 hour SWAT standoff in southwest Charlotte ended when the man involved died by suicide.

Officers responded to Prideland Court before 12 p.m. on Sunday after receiving a call for service about a suicide threat. Before arriving, officers were informed that a man was inside the residence threatening to kill himself. Upon arrival, CMPD found the person in the driveway armed with a shotgun.

Officers immediately evacuated the surrounding area and continued attempts to de-escalate the situation peacefully. When the subject entered the attached garage and refused to exit the residence, officers requested the assistance of CMPD’s SWAT Team.

Negotiators, CPCRT, along with family and friends, spoke with the subject on the phone for more than 24 hours, attempting to de-escalate the situation, police said.

“Throughout the night and into the next day, everyone worked together to get the subject to accept mental health assistance,” CMPD said.

The subject regularly brandished a shotgun and fired one round inside the residence at 4 a.m.  Officers continued to work to bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion.

Officers heard a gunshot from inside the residence around 12:30 p.m. Monday and observed the subject fall to the ground. After entering the residence, officers pronounced the unidentified subject dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No CMPD officers were injured or discharged their service weapons during this incident.
