CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives are searching for the driver of a red Ford Explorer after they hit and killed a woman crossing the street in northwest Charlotte Thursday night and fled the scene.

Officers arrived at the scene of the hit and run around 10 p.m. on November 25th to find someone lying in the roadway and in need of medical attention near the intersection of Sunset Road and Beatties Ford Road.

Officers say upon closer inspection, they determined the person lying in the roadway was a woman and she had been fatally struck by a car.

Detectives say the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigation reveals the woman was in a crosswalk and crossing Sunset Road when she was struck by a fire-red, two-door Ford Explorer.

Police say the driver of the Explorer took off after hitting the woman and was last seen fleeing the scene on Sunset Road toward Peachtree Road.

Detectives say they are actively searching for the suspect vehicle and are asking the public for any information that may help with the investigation into this case.

Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of the suspect vehicle or its driver is asked to call 911 immediately.
