CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board unanimously voted to approved retention bonuses for almost all of the district’s teachers and staff.

The vote happening during a Wednesday emergency meeting. District staff says the bonuses are meant to boost morale and encourage teachers and staff to stick with CMS for the remainder of the year and into the future.

Full time employees will receive $2500, while part time employees will receive $1200.  The payments will be made in two parts. One this month, and another in September of 2022.

The CMS employee retention program is budgeted at approximately $48 million in American Rescue Plan Act-ESSER III funds.

The only CMS employees not eligible for the bonuses are daily substitutes and guest teachers.

The move comes as hundreds of teachers are leaving CMS. The district is also working with a bus driver and substitute teacher shortages.
