CHARLOTTE, NC. — Dozens of people packed Lake Forest Church Wednesday, where CMS leaders, parents, teachers, and students gathered to discuss enhancing safety measures at Hopewell High School. It comes after police found a stolen gun and a loaded gun on campus following a fight on November 3rd after an attempted robbery between students. Three 17-year-olds, a 16-year-old, and a 15-year-old were all charged. Superintendent Earnest Winston says after that, the district created an internal task force to tackle school safety. They’re also considering using clear backpacks and metal detectors.
“All ideas are on the table. We are committed to doing everything we can when I say we, our Board of Education, and our staff. We are committed to doing everything we can to keep our school safe,” Winston says.
Rhonda Cheek represents the Hopewell area on the CMS Board of Education. She says the district would pay for clear backpacks., but the issue is:
“But the biggest problem that we’re hearing with that supply chain to get them in. So if you get them, or able to do that, it probably won’t happen until January,” adds Cheek.
Hopewell High also added Titans Moms and Dads on a mission where parents will be the eyes and ears of the hallway.
