CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Teachers are rallying amid worries about an ongoing staffing shortage in CMS.
Members of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Association of Educators gathered outside Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
They say teachers are overworked and underpaid.
CMS says, as of last week, 524 teachers have left the district since August 1st.
Another 93 are planning to leave by the end of 2021.
Currently, the district has more than 9,000 active teachers.
“As educators, we want to give the best student experiences, and it’s disheartening to us that right now we can’t do that because we’re battling, trying to figure out how to cover classes,” says CMS teacher Amanda Thompson-Rice.
The district is also dealing with a bus driver shortage. The board recently increased bus driver pay, starting at $17.75 an hour.
