Don’t Kill The Cats: What You Need To Know About Animals and Cold Weather

[ad_1]

CHARLOTTE, NC–It may be the most wonderful time of the year but for some animals in the Queen City, it’s a time where they seek shelter from the cold. Humane education specialist, Julia Conner with CMPD’s Animal Care and Control says while people are celebrating this holiday season, they need to be aware that they could unintentionally hurt an animal.

Conner says, “Make sure you’re checking your car before you just crank the engine and go because you could severely injure or kill them if they are in the engine and wheel well.”

Conner says the weather outside is frightful for stray cats and that they’ll likely be trying to stay warm through the night. She says, “In the morning, you want to check your wheel well, you want to bang on your hood and make a lot of noise to make sure they’re not any cats around.”

If you’re having relatives coming over who are allergic to your pets, Conner wants you to think twice about putting them outside.

She says, “If you’re going to leave them outside, just make sure that you have a good place for them to go, that you have shelter, proper doghouse or you’ve got an insulated enclosure for them. Four walls, a roof, and a floor.”

Even if you have to run a few errands, make sure you’re intentional about how they’re set up. She says, “The floor has to be up off the ground so that if it does rain, it doesn’t accumulate under there and make it even colder. Plus, straw! Don’t use blankets because they get wet, they don’t dry off, straw is way better.”
