Garinger High School Locked Down After Shots Fired Nearby, Juvenile Charged

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A juvenile is facing multiple charges after a reported shooting near Garinger High School led to a lockdown Tuesday morning, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Officers responded around 7 a.m. to the intersection of Sugar Creek Road and Eastway Drive after reports of shots fired in the area. According to Garinger High School Principal Bracey, shots were fired near campus by individuals reported to be in a black SUV. The suspects targeted by gunshots returned fire and ran toward Garinger High School on Eastway Drive.

It was believed that those students possessed a weapon, which resulted in the lock down of the school while officers provided security to the school and searched for any suspects, according to CMPD and CMS officials. Principal Bracey said arriving students were directed to the gym where officers began to conduct a search which lead to finding a firearm and two loaded magazines.

Police said the juvenile has been charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of firearm by a minor, and possession of a firearm on school grounds.

No one has been reported to be injured from the incident.
