CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A state senator in California is introducing a bill to ban live ammunition and guns that can fire live ammunition from theatrical productions across the state. It’s in response to the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. She was shot and killed last week after actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun, that he was told was unloaded, while on set of a movie called Rust. Production on that film is halted indefinitely while an investigation is underway. The production team says they are cooperating with police and conducting an internal review of safety protocols.
The assistant director on the movie who handed that prop gun to Alec Baldwin before the fatal shooting last week was previously fired from a film production after a gun incident on that set injured a crew member. Dave Halls was serving as assistant director on the film Freedom’s Path in 2019 when a gun “unexpectedly discharged” on set. It caused a sound crew member to recoil from the blast and stopped production. After that, Halls was removed from the set and fired from the production.
What happened on the Rust set is already impacting other movies. Productions like The Rookie have modified their plans for using live guns on set.
