CHARLOTTE, N.C. – At least three people are dead and eight are hurt after a shooting a high school near Detroit. The students who were killed include a 16-year-old boy, a 14-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl. Officials say eight other people were shot, including a teacher. Two are currently in surgery and the remaining six are in stable condition. Authorities say a 15-year-old male student opened fire at Oxford High School Tuesday afternoon, and is in custody. They say the the shooter is a sophomore at the school.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer says, “My heart goes out to the families. This is an unimaginable tragedy. I hope that we can all rise to the occasion and wrap our arms around the families, the affected children and school personnel, and this community.”
And Harding University High School in west Charlotte was put on lock down Tuesday afternoon after a fight on campus. A gun was also found and two students have been charged. It doesn’t appear anyone was hurt. Scarlett Hollingsworth with Moms Demand Action’s Charlotte chapter tells us, “What we know is that guns are all in our community, guns are in the home and when guns are in the home and they are not properly secured then that is when it leads to gun showing up in our schools.”
