A juvenile suspect has been accused in the death of a 14-year-old who was fatally shot in Salisbury while playing video games Sunday afternoon, according to the police department.

The Salisbury Police Department obtained a Juvenile Petition for the homicide that happened at a Maple Avenue home. The petition was served and the juvenile was released back to the custody of their guardian by the Department of Juvenile Justice.

SALISBURY, N.C. — A 14-year-old was shot and killed in Salisbury Sunday afternoon, sparking an investigation, according to police.

According to the Salisbury Police Department, a group of kids were playing video games at a Maple Avenue home. During that time, a gun accidentally discharged while being passed around, according to police.

The victim, a Salisbury High School student, was transported to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, police said.

The gun was later determined to have been stolen from another location. Investigators said through preliminary information it has been determined that the shooting was accidental.

Due to the sensitivity of the death, local schools are on precautionary lockdown.
