Police Open Homicide Investigation After Identifying Body Found Near Blue Ridge Parkway Overlook

Detectives opened a homicide investigation on Thursday after discovering the body found near an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway last Saturday was that of 33-year-old Josue Calderon of Rhode Island.

Special agents from the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch with support from NPS law enforcement rangers, are leading the investigation with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Watauga County Sherriff’s Office.

BLOWING ROCK, N.C. — A man was found dead Saturday near an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, according to the National Park Service.

The park service said a park visitor reported the body below the Yadkin Valley Overlook, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Asheville, and law enforcement rangers found the body a short time later, a news outlet reported.

The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches 469 miles (755 kilometers) from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, through Asheville and Western North Carolina to the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The cause of death is unknown, officials said.
