Thanksgiving Tips For Your Pup

There are safe Thanksgiving foods to share with your dogs, but there are also toxic ones.

While there are some obvious no-nos when it comes to feeding your pup such as alcohol, chocolate and caffeine, there are others you may not know.

There are some sources that say a little bit of non fatty turkey is fine for your dog, but the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) warns against it saying “even a small amount can cause a life-threatening condition in pets known as pancreatitis”.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA put together a list of holiday foods that are dangerous to dogs:

1. Alcohol
2. Caffeine
3. Candy
4. Chocolate
5. Ham & Bacon
6. Dairy Foods
7. Eggnog
8. Garlic, Onions and Chives
9. Nutmeg
10. Raisins and Grapes
11. Nuts
12. Salt
13. Sugar

Ham and bacon may be an item on this list that is surprising to some. Pork can cause pancreatitis. in dogs. Number 8 on the list above is another that many dog parents overlook – garlic, onions and chives. Anything cooked with any of these ingredients is a big NO. This could be anything from mashed potatoes to stuffing to a casserole. These can damage blood cells and cause anemia in dogs.

Do not worry though! There are a few things that will be ok for your pup outside of the typical dog treat:

1. Cooked sweet potatoes
2. Baked potatoes
3. Pumpkin purée
4. Cucumbers
5. Carrots (steamed or raw)
6. Steamed green beans or greens
7. Unsweetened cranberries
8. Bananas
9. Apples
