CHARLOTTE, NC – For the first time since the inauguration, Vice President Kamala Harris in North Carolina. She spoke in Charlotte to promote the Biden administration’s infrastructure bill that was signed into law last month.
“I wanted to show my support for the Biden administration,” said Pamela Smalley, a Harris supporter.
The vice president spoke about infrastructure investment in Charlotte and the state.
“it is about being directly responsive to the needs of people, real people,” said Harris.
VP Harris and the Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg were joined by Governor Cooper to tour electric vehicle operations at a CATS bus garage.
They spoke about job creation and the need to improve people’s ability to move around.
“Here in North Carolina, you have so many people who spend an extraordinary amount of their time commuting because of these poor systems,” explained Harris.
The law means a lot of money flowing into the state:
– $7.2B – Highway Projects
– $1.1B – Drinking Water Improvements
– $900M – Public Transportation
– $100M – Broadband Access
– $100M – EV Charging Stations
The law passed with bipartisan support, but a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee says the law will “worsen inflation, raise taxes and add hundreds of billions to the national debt.”
Meanwhile, local leaders say mobility is a top priority.
“Reduce congestion on our roads, build more rail. More buses and keep those buses being clean buses, reliable buses. That’s what I think is most important,” said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles.
There are more than 3,000 miles of roads and 1,500 hundred bridges across the state that are considered in “poor” condition by the north carolina department of transportation.
