Women’s Tennis Association Turns Up The Heat On China: Where Is Peng Shuai

[ad_1]

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In an unprecedented move, the Women’s Tennis Association is suspending all tournaments in China and Hong Kong. The WTA is demanding direct contact with pro tennis player Peng Shuai. She hasn’t been seen in public since November 2nd, when she accused, in a social media post, a retired senior communist party leader of sexual assault. 30 minutes after she made that post, it was deleted. The WTA’s suspension of their lucrative ten year tournament deal is a major deal. They are also demanding a full investigation.

Human Rights Watch China director Sophie Richardson says, “The WTA has really turned in an exemplary performance essentially saying that her well-being is more important than business.”

Meanwhile, Chinese state media is ignoring the story inside their country. Outside, it’s tweeting updates and videos of Peng; videos that activists say are almost certainly staged, aimed at a foreign audience to repair China’s reputation ahead of the Olympic games.

Our question of the night: where do you think Peng Shuai is?

This episode’s panel features:
